Arrival

Just a very quick post.

It's just past nine here, and I am about to start my first full day in Toronto. Yesterday was as full on as international travle tends to be (although for once, I didn't get picked for every security check. Brilliant!), but I got here in one piece.

Toronto, so far, is living up to its rep - friendly, busy, beautiful. The friendliness is awesome (I swear, it's like I've found my people!) - on the bus from the airport I didn't have the right change, so the bus driver asked if anyone had change, and then a lady paid my fare for me - a lovely intro. I repaid them by doing my weekly RAoK a day early - shortbread for them! On the subway also, people were so kind, even though I was pooped and being my general bimboish self!

Comedy moment: Outside on of the posher hotels round here, I stopped to check my map...and a limo driver popped up to be and said "Hi Miss, are you waiting for your limo?" Hahahahahaha. Fabulous. I looked a fright I'm sure after travelling all day, but evidently I was still working a look!

Checked in, lovely meal, managed to last until 9.30 before conking out.

But I woke up at 6.30, so hopefully the acclimatising is alomost done.

Today, I'm hitting the streets (no, not it that way!) this morning, catching a service at a really cute little church that's right smack in the middle of the enertainment district, then I'm meeting Christy (Hey Christy!) for baked goods, then we're getting together with Alex and maybe Scott. It's gone be busy, to quote Mlle Wilson and I.

Bye for now - more soon!

Love,
Cxx

Woo!

This time in twenty-four hours, all things being well, I will be flying west towards the beautiful nation of Canada.

This trip has been planned for a while, but it doesn't seem quite 'real' yet. I've got my tickets and currency and passport and all...but it doesn't really feel like it's arrived. Now, however, it is literally just around the corner and apart from the fact I haven't packed (and I have to buy several things at the airport because I've just had NO TIME to sort it here - guidebook, purse, sleepmask...) I am ready for an adventure!

Christy, Bee, Scott and Ash (plus any of the other blogbuddies I have in Quebec and Ontario who I may end up seeing) - so looking forward to some real life adventures and banter with you.

And Canada itself? Damn, I think I'm ready to fall in love.

I've just pinged the kids out the door...the classroom will do...time to go pack and get excited :-). Won't know about 'net access till I'm there, but I'll check in when I can!

Love and good things,
Cxx

Autumn days and the grass is jewelled...

What is it about autumn? I swear, in a past life I must have been a hedgehog, or a squirrel, or a bear, such is my propensity to hibernate! It gets cold and suddenly I am all about the cosiness, the cups of tea (ah, sweet nourishing tea), the soup and crusty bread. I actively struggle to stir my stumps in the morning also – as much as I like getting up and at ‘em, there’s something about a snuggly bed on a cold morning – who wants to move?

We had ice for the first time this year this morning (ice on my windshield! New experience!). I cannot tell you how fun it was to travel in by car rather than moped (wearing the prerequisite eleven million layers of clothing!). The more I drive, the less I can believe I got on for two years without four wheels. I do miss my wee yellow bumblebee though – it’s a real shame she got smashed to smithereens. I’ll be eternally grateful for that wee bike though – she took the hit that was meant for me, and I’m glad I’m here to tell the tale. Insurance is being a nightmare though – even though the driver of the car that hit me sailed through a give way and whumped into me, they are contesting the claim. Man, sometimes people are crap, aren’t they? If I were them, I’d be counting my blessings and paying up – a few inches either way, a slightly different landing from moi…and they would be looking at jail, not a few hundred pounds. Physically, I’m doing OK, but I have stiffness and pains at times, which niggles me as I've never had that before. The nightmares come back at the oddest times, but in the main…I’m OK. Just peeved it’s taking so long to sort….

So the end of half-term is galloping towards us here – thank heavens! The children are unbelievably tired at the moment, we are having ‘bubbles and blubs’ left, right, and centre! They are full of beans for our assembly next week though – I hope they do well, wee bunch of stars that they are.

In between prepping for parents’ evening and the assembly, I am cobbling together stuff for Canada. I am so excited to see Montreal and Toronto, and I’ll even get to meet some of you good folk :-D. Good times, j’espere!

In other news, the present accruing (is that even a word?) continues – my little stockpile of Christmas gifts is growing and growing, huzzah! I love giving gifts, and having a look around to find something that will really make someone smile…my favourite advert on telly at the mo (apart from the drumming gorilla/monkey!) is the Argos one though – a woman is leafing through a catalogue looking for gifts and her neighbour is practising Christmas songs next door. She bangs on the door and declares “It’s only October!”. Hahahahahahaha.

So, parents evening tomorrow (mmm, five hours of fun), London on Saturday, assembly on Wednesday, Canada on Thursday (one week! Yay!). Then a break before the utter MANIA of November and December.

Love it.

Have a wonderful day etc., all!

Taking ten minutes out...

I looked at my calendar this morning (after waking, and realising I’d set the alarm for ‘Sunday’ time, not ‘Saturday’ time – a move which would have meant I had oodles of time to get to worship band practice on a Sunday…but meant quite a rush for a Saturday morning to get to school. Man, that was hurried. Yet another reason not to like Saturday morning school, right?) and could not believe it was October 13th! Where has this year gone? Seems like yesterday I was looking out at a dark and dreary January morning from my desk, and now its all autumnal mists and new winter coats round here!

School is as hectic as ever – as I take ten minutes out to write this I am surrounded by the hustle and bustle of children, children everywhere. I don’t usually write posts at school, but after an hour or two of proofreading and tweaking reports (yep, we’re onto reports already) I figured my soul needed a little calming. Then I’m going to go mail a package (one or two of my friends may receive a surprise…some time in November, if the mail strike continues!), make some tea for Sarah, Soph, Fi, Rach and I, and then get back to the books. I am determined to finish all my marking and planning before lunchtime today, so I can actually enjoy my weekend!

What have you got planned for the weekend? This afternoon Fi, Rach and I are going to take a road trip to the Cotswolds for afternoon tea and lazy country shopping…it’s really been frenetic here, so cosy is a watchword. We’re also going to get our diaries out to plan a jaunt to London – Fi ‘won’ a photoshoot in a raffle and she’s very kindly invited me along. Should be banterfilled, so we’re going to make a weekend of it. Also in November I’ve got Hannah to come visit, and the Gilesgate girlies are coming at the start of December to help me put up my tree and swap gifts – the month is so busy we thought we’d be quick off the mark.

My Christmas preparations are a little underway already – because I’m in Canada for ALL of my half-term break, I tried to get some things sorted early. I also like to get started early so I can actually enjoy my favourite month of December! Between friends, family, school and church, it’s always busy…but in such a good way.

This time in two weeks I’ll be fast asleep…in Toronto! I am so looking forward to my visit. Meeting some of the Canadian contingent will be fabulous, as will spending time in two amazing cities! I’m also looking forward to dialling it down a notch – lots of walking, big cups of coffee and reading on the agenda. And nary a seven-year-old in sight!

Love to all, as always,
Cxx

An actual post :-)

Man oh man oh man, I’m tired. I’m not complaining…but I am tired!

Things here are busy, the plate is full (as ever), but on the whole, life’s pretty good. Work is as hectic as ever (in the next ten days alone I’ve got an open morning, reports due, a parents’ evening and a whole school assembly), the friends are keeping me busy, journeys and travels are afoot, the gym is proving hilarious, and church is a sprinkling of hundreds and thousands on top…

As I type it’s half ten Tuesday, and I am curled up and cosy in front of the telly, watching ‘Bringing Up Baby’ (OMG, I like shows like this far too much. They are genius for picking up tips and anecdotes) and enjoying an icy Corona. Mmm, limey beer. It’s been another busy day at work (8 – 7, the usual Tuesday hilarity), then I had a ladies group meeting. Can’t complain about that though – good chat and cake I always a good thing! Got in at nine fifty, took a good look at the marking pile, thought better of it, and decided to chill instead. This term I am determined to make time to relax this term…no matter what!

In two weeks…I’ll be a couple of sleeps away from Canada. Oh man, I’m excited! After the everyday mania of life here, having time to relax, sightsee and experience an amazing new country will be amazing! I’m also very excited to meet Bee, Scott, Christy, Alexandra and Ash…if anyone else is from Toronto or Montreal, please do drop me a line – I’m looking to get a natives eye view!

Isn’t it funny how music can make you react and look at you view a band or act? Hard-Fi’s latest single is really just confirming for me why I dislike that band – it’s trite, smug and dull (hmmm, rather like their lead singer’s persona – he may be a lovely bloke in reality, but in interviews? Gah). Whereas Mika’s new song…I kind of love. He’s growing on me, in his quirky pop style (rather than growing on me in any other way!).

I’m watching the season finale of ‘Skins’ as I wrap this up. I enjoyed it the first time round too…it’s a bit out there, but I liked this show. Random ending though, but as it ended well for my fave characters, I’m content. Quote of the show though? Nothing racey, just the comedy gold that is: “I’m moving to Elgin. It’s in Scotland and everyone’s happy.”

Love it.

How are you guys?

Marathon....

...survey.

Oh man. I am SO glad it’s the weekend. In a rare break from form, it’s been another busy and ever so slightly (?) stressful week…so it’s good to kick back and relax. It’s a babysitting night here (am faithfully saving pennies for Canada, Spain, and other adventures to come), so I am chilled in front of E! with a big cup of coffee and time to write (and catch up on marking, natch…). There are loads of surveys doing the rounds, so this post will be a meme – I’m low on sleep and inspiration tonight, so this is the lazy girls blogging at work :-).

100. WHAT’S YOUR MYSPACE PROFILE SONG & WHY?
Hometown Glory by Adele. She has the most amazing voice, and Zane Lowe has been dropping this for weeks – total earworm!

99. DO YOU HAVE A JOB?
Yes, I do. I kind of have a job, plus a vacation job, plus a sideline, actually. Man… is it any wonder I’m thinking of going back to school? Haha, like I could ever be not busy…I guess I’d just like to be busy in a different way!

98. MIDDLE NAME?
Rachael.

97. DO YOU HAVE A CRUSH ON SOMEONE?
Nope. Not really – I’ve been weaning myself off of one (because I’m a grown up and all), and the job is just about done. Hurray!

96. LIED IN THE LAST 24 HOURS?
No. Had to do the PR thang for a solid two hours at open morning, but there was no lying!

94. WHERE WAS THE LAST PLACE YOU TOOK A PLANE TO?
Scotland, place of my birth. Lord bless Easyjet.

93. WHAT IS THE LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED?
Hot Fuzz. That film is AMAZING! And Michael, you are sooooo right. The town in that is very very like Forres at times.

92. WHAT MAKES YOU ANNOYED?
Rudeness. Unkindness. When things don’t work (freeview box, I’m looking at you from over here right now…).

91. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?
Good question….a writer, a deejay, a mother, a pub quiz winner, a singer, but most of all? I’d like to be happy. And a good person (whatever that means).

90. WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
Claire. Well, that’s my name when I’m not teaching!

88. DO YOU HAVE A FRIEND OF THE OPPOSITE SEX YOU CAN TALK TO?
Yep, I have a few. Darn, I’m a lucky wee quine.

Uh-huh, I have one of both. One of them is probably currently in Forres, on his laptop….the other is either in Bristol, or in Wales visiting her fella.

86. WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
In the very cosy drawing room of someone else’s beautiful home. I’m not grown up enough for a drawing room of my own yet!

84. WHAT DOES THE 10TH MESSAGE IN YOUR INBOX SAY ON YOUR PHONE?

82. DID YOU LIKE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL?
Both my schools had moments of genius…and moments that were utter balls. C’est la vie, non?

Probably in the utility room of our house in Forres, reading either Terry Pratchett or a murder mystery.

80. DO YOU HAVE ANY KIDS?
Of my own, no. But my life is fairly riddled with other peoples’…. Haha, I love it.

79. WHO IS THE 5TH PERSON YOU GOT A MISSED CALL FROM YOUR CELL PHONE?Hayley, because I was late en route to the pub the other night!

76. WHAT SONG ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
’4 in the morning’ by Gwen Stefani – an ad for her album just came on.

75. DO YOU SING IN THE SHOWER?
I used to all the time – I still do, but less frequently. I sing more or less everywhere though, so that would not be that unusual, right?

74. DO YOU OWN ANY PETS?
No. But I still want a guinea pig. And when I get one, he or she will have a RIDICULOUS name.

72. LAST TIME YOU LISTENED TO COUNTRY MUSIC?
Earlier today. I loves a bit of cheesey old school country, I does.

69. WHAT ARE YOUR FEARS?
Marmite, neds & chavs, bad weaves, pissing off Kimora Lee Simmons.

68. WHAT CAN YOU HEAR NOW?
Tupac and Biggie swearing at one another on TV (the rappers, natch. But those would be cool-as names for guinea pigs, now I come to think of it….).

65. WHAT ARE YOU WEARING?
Raspberry pink long top, black cardi, jeans.

64. LAST PERSON TO COMMENT YOU?
I’m not sure…let me check….Alexandra on myspace, Michael on bebo, Mathilda on facebook. Ta-da!

54. WOULD YOU DIE FOR SOMEONE?
I hope I never have to make that kind of choice.

53. LATEST THING YOU’VE RECENTLY LEARNED?
That a handbrake is not a gearstick. I had a bimbo moment in the parking lot earlier :-S

No, like the third bowl of porridge, I am juuuuust right.

51. WHAT DO YOU SMELL?
Nothing much…a little polish, a little coffee, a little lotion.

Not particularly…there are a few worries here and there, but this evening I’m feeling wonderfully chilled. And sleepy.

48. WHAT ARE YOU DOING TOMORROW?
Church, work, chores, and something fun with Fiona.

47. IF 1 OF YOUR EX'S WANTED YOU BACK, WOULD YOU TAKE THEM?
1 or 2 of them, maybe. The others – that would be a bad idea, I think. You always split up / never move beyond flinging for a reason, no?

44. BED SHEET COLOR?
White (duvet cover has pink rosebuds) or pale blue (navy gingham duvet covers). Man, that last sentence was a little housewifely of me.

I love loads of people right now. But romantically, I’m out. I’ll just save all that sort of love up for now.

42. CAN YOU SWIM?

To the west, to the west...

It’s early Tuesday morning, I’ve just written the bulk of an assembly, and now I’m writing a blog post.

I’ve decided this week had better be productive!

I had a lovely weekend – it was our exeat, which means we finished on Friday afternoon, rather than Saturday afternoon! Friday afternoon was reading and crumpets and tea, and then I drove off west to Bristol.

Where I had a delightful break, catching up with my wee sister, who’s studying there now, and with Mlle Wilson, who always keeps it west country. It was all pretty lowkey – movies (have you seen ‘Run Fatboy Run’ yet? If not, you need it in your life! Soooo funny, and just right for a romcom – heavy on the ‘com’ part!), chatting, cakes, watching bad music TV and ‘QI’ and reruns of ‘Girls of the Playboy Mansion’. A decent break – just what I needed!

Sunday night I came back, and yesterday, because of a (blessed) clerical error we had a day off. Love it. Chores and work and shopping…and the bottom kind of fell off my car. But now she has a new exhaust, and it was ‘ouch’ expensive as opposed to ‘oh my life, they just severed a limb’ pricey. Thank heavens for very, very small (and now, more like tiny) savings accounts.

And now, 6.30, and as I have my coffee I’m blogging before I head off for a swim before school…. Just time for a quick quiz!

1. Where were you at 3:02 AM this morning?
Fast asleep. I love sleep!

2. What was the first thing you thought this morning?
Wow. That’s early (5.15 wake up call!).

3. Is the person you have a crush on older or younger than you?
I’ve almost cured myself of this particular crush, so this question isn’t really relevant at this time…

4. What did you do last night?
Watched ‘Hollyoaks’, called home, sang, went to a salsa fit class, did laundry, watched ‘One Tree Hill’.

5. What do you hope to do this weekend?
Lots and lots and lots of work – reports are looming, again. I’d also like to do some planning for Canada.

6. Do you think you will be in a relationship 3 months from now?
I have absolutely no idea! If the right person came along, that would be lovely…but it’s not like you can put it in an action plan!

7. Do you own a stereo that cost more than $100?
No.

8. Have you ever told someone of the opposite sex you loved them and meant it?
Nope. Well, not in a romantic sense. Friends and family? All the time.

9. How's your heart lately?
Remarkably healthy and resilient, ta. Long may it continue!

10. What were you doing this morning at 7 am this morning?
In twenty five minutes I will be arriving at the pool and getting changed ready to swim.

11. What were you doing this afternoon at 12 p.m.?
Yesterday at noon I was writing thank you notes.

12. Are there any previous relationships you wish could have lasted longer?
Maybe one or two, yes.

13. When was the last time you saw the last person you kissed?
Months ago.

14. What was the reason you last cried?
A TV show! Oh, I know, it was ‘Scrubs’ the other night.

15. What are you listening to right now?
Sour Times by Portishead.

16. How did you meet the 1st and 3rd person in your phone?
Work and church.

17. How old are they?
Both in their thirties.

18. Have you ever driven without a license?
Once, in Ohio. Back in the day – thanks Amanda!

19. Have you ever talked to someone when they were high?
Yep.

20. How many red lights have you ran?A few. Never as a car driver though.

21. Have you ever cried while taking a shower?
I don’t think so. I kind of love showers.

22. What was your favorite grade?
A+!

23. What were you doing at 12 A.M. last night?
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

24. Whats a surefire way to catch your attention?
Make me laugh, or surprise me. Or both!

25. Have you ever, in any way, been betrayed by someone you trusted?
Of course.

26. When was the last time you were given something?
Sunday. Mlle Wilson gave me a DVD and loaned me a book.

27. Is there anything that you are craving for right now?
To go back to bed? For it to be half-term? For a personal assistant? For Forres to be as close as Bristol?

28. Where did your last hug take place?
Sunday. Hugs R Cool.

29. Do people ever make stupid mistakes when spelling or saying your name?
Yep, in spelling both ones. They’re not hard, they just have variations. As does my middle name, now I think of it! Cheers, parentals!

31. Do you drink tea?
Oh yes. Mlle Wilson was spoiling me with Mariage Freres this weekend – the schizzle.

32. When was the last time you saw a cop?
Yesterday.

33. Did you ride in someone else's car today?
No.

34. Would it be weird if a person's real name was Cheeto?
I’m sure Britney had it on her list.

Have a great day, everyone!
