At long last, my answers to my first ‘ask me anything’ assignment....

From Randall: Since I thought your recent read sounded interesting, what is your favorite book(s)? Favorite author(s)?

Oh, what a great question! When I was younger I was the typical bookworm and I really, really would read anywhere (at the dinner table, in bed, in the bath, in the bathroom….). Alas, years of school and an arts degree, follow by my postgrad in teaching killed this off somewhat, but I’m glad to say I seem to be back on the wagon now! Just finished The Independence of Mary Bennett, about to go onto The State of Africa, then Female Chauvinist Pigs. Yeah!

My favourite books would be the ones I know I can return to again and again… Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, Join Me (which as Rory reminded me, is NOT fiction! the story narrative thing meant I popped it in this list - categorising fail!), High Fidelity, Gone with the Wind… books that either take me to another place…or simply make me smile. All of those books are fiction, but I also love good nonfiction too – I’m on a bit of a kick at the moment. Books as diverse as Bad Science, Under The Banner of Heaven, and Chick Flicks: A Guide to the Movies Women Love make me smile from ear to geeky ear and make me think too. I guess my favourite authors would be Danny Wallace, Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott and Nick Hornby…but I’m always pleased to meet a new one (and have a slight Achilles heel for the puffy girly tomes churned out by Cecelia Ahern too!).

From wigsf: What makes you angry?

Hee. I tend to not get angry a huge amount, even though I do have a hot temper (I tend to go into a rage very quickly, fix stuff, then not bear a grudge)! Little things can grate though – bad driving (you know, that guy who does 45mph in a 60mph zone, when the roads are clear and safe for full speed, but too windy too overtake on….), rudeness (like when you hold a door for someone and they don’t say thank you), oooh, and when people belittle the dreams and hopes and achievements of others.

Most of my proper anger, though, I tend to direct at myself. I know all too well the many flaws I have, and I can be quite hard on myself if and when I don’t meet the standards I set for myself (this happens far too often! But I am improving). I also get angry at myself when I write or say something when I'm tired or angry or stressed and then regret it. I'm good at saying sorry though, and always try to if I have upset or wronged someone.

From pheromone girl: What is your favorite post that you've ever written?

Oh man. My list post created an inspiration to do lots of things, so I guess that’s one favourite. Another would be this post that I wrote about a sad time and a big loss for me. Or this one, about some of my history and the things that have made me who I am I guess. Ooooh, and this one, because the subject is freaking awesome! (oh, and I so need to get on with some more posts in that series!)

I would say that most of what I write on here is just fluffy feelgood stuff....but sometimes it gets, and I get, a little deeper...

From Riot Kitty: Do you have a middle name?

Yes, I do. It’s Rachael. Fun fact – I wasn’t aware that it was spelt this way till I was eleven. I’d been spelling it Rachel!

From Tinsie: I was going to ask about favourite books, but since Randall beat me to it, how about your favourite movies?

My favourite movies tend to change from year to year, but there are some I come back to, time and again...’The Sound of Music’, ‘Gone With The Wind’, ‘Singin’ In The Rain’, ‘South Park: Bigger, Longer...’, ‘All About Eve’, ‘Zoolander’, ‘Bring It On’, ‘Finding Nemo’, ‘Anchorman’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘Back To The Future’, ‘Sleepless In Seattle’ all spring to mind right now. I’m a comedies, classics, animations, dramas, teen films, action/adventure, musicals kind of girl, really. Cannot abide horror films – am a big old fraidy cat!

From Wiwille: Do you believe that there are indeed pacifists or do you believe humans will always resort to violence in the most extreme of circumstances?

I hope that there are pacifists. I’ve yet to meet a true one. And I personally believe that at times a little anger, and heaven knows, maybe even a little violence, can achieve something important.

From Scarlet: What's your favorite dessert?

Creme brulee! Just typing that my mouth is watering!

From Spark: If you were to have one girl child and one boy child, what would you name them?

Like I could choose just one name...you saw my answers on books and films, right? I tend to go through ‘favourite name’ phases...at the moment my favourite girls names are Katherine (Kitty), Arimathea, Mackenzie, Rose, Eleanor and Bethany. Boys are probably Jack, Michael, Jonathan, Iain and Moray. These choices will change entirely within hours....hopefully by the time I have children (if I have children) I’ll have become more decisive!

From Christielli: What's your favourite breakfast cereal? And, what are your five fave albums of all time??

Mmmmm, cereal. I tend to veer between healthy options (muesli, porridge, bran flakes) and kidcentric sugarfests (hello, coco pops!). Five fave albums of all time? Oh man, that is quite literally a whole other post...I’ll get on it!

From Rawbean: What did you like about Canada? What didn't you like?

I have so much love for Canada – the people, the scenery, the food, the sense of humour, the fun....the only thing I don’t like is that it’s all the way over there! I really hope to go back soon. In an ideal world I’d love to emigrate for a few years, but it’s pretty hard as a teacher.

From Nicole: What is your favourite season?

I love the dews and the showers-and-sun of spring, the plants spring up and the smell of rained on grass, dusted with bunches and bundles of daffodils. I love the sunny breezy days of summer, bright flowers and birdsong awakening me in the early morning. I love the mists and coolness of autumn, walking along kicking through piles of crunchy leaves. And I love the snows and chills of winter, sitting curled up with a cup of tea listening to the cruel wind outside. Yep, you guessed it...I love all four seasons.

Well gang, I hope you enjoyed my first ‘ask me anything’ – thanks for the great questions! I think I'll do this again sometime, some of these questions really made me think!

Love,

Cxx

  2. I like this post. Fun!

Oh, I came across this book called "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies". It's 90% original Austen, but zombified. Looks fun, although I've never ever been able to read Austen.

LOL That albums get a new post, but cereal doesn't. Snap, Crackle and Pop! are offended. ;) You have Rice Krispies in the UK, right?

Oh and I also dislike negative people. They bring me down.

  4. Oooh, I love the name Eleanor. That's always been a favourite of mine. I used to know a girl called Eleanor in university. She liked to do her studying by the light of an oil lamp, and made study notes with a fountain pen. I thought that was pretty cool.

Thank you for your comment - I do read them all but it may take me a little while (a couple of days) to respond during busy times. I love reading what you have to say!

Have a wonderful day!
