Blog Every Day In May: Fit and Healthy


Today on Blog Every Day In May we are looking at the prompt 'Fit and Healthy'.  This is a theme I've written on before, and one which is pretty close to my heart.  Particularly now, with a wedding looming ahead next year.  I would so love to walk down the aisle feeling fit, healthy and pretty!  I am currently a size 20 (urgh!  I do not like being this big.  I have friends who can rock being plus size and do so fiercely, but I feel.....cumbersome, for want of a better word.  There's just too much of me!), and I'm aiming to get down to a 16, or maybe a 14, by next August.  With my sturdy Scottish build (stocky, man hands, childbearing hips and braid shoulders) I fear I am never destined to be Kate Moss waif-like, but I can certainly be healthier and a lot trimmer!

I said to Matthew the other day that I met him as a size 16/18 - I'd love to walk down the aisle that size or a little smaller.  I'm aiming to lose 50 pounds in the year and three months before the wedding, but of course will be thrilled with any shrinkage!  I've already lost a stone this year, so I'm hoping to build on this.

The plan is simple to say, trickier to do (don't I know it!).  Eat less, move more.  I'm taking more walks, cross-training, and adding some light strength in for now.  The gym I'm joining opens in late June, just ahead of my summer break, and I am looking forward to gymming it up plenty during the vacation.  As I said to Eileen yesterday (who has done SO well toning up for her own wedding - you go girl!), hopefully if I can get some results over the break, by September I'll be in a good place habits wise and can carry them through into the autumn and the winter.

Food wise, we're going to be eating more fruits and veggies (luckily, we're vegetable nuts), meat, nuts wholegrains.  On the danger list are refined carbs, alcohol and sugar....we will still have them occasionally but I'm aware these are hazardous....I can just eat way too many of them!

A big focus is going to be sleep as well.  Try as I might, I tend to get distracted and wind up not getting enough rest....I am aiming for 7 hours a night.  8 hours is just....not going to happen during termtime, but as I can sleep more at weekends and breaks I'm not too concerned.  But I must get to seven...currently we tend to clock in between 5 and 6.5 hours.  Because our wake up call is early, we have to get to bed earlier, but we are fighting ourselves as we're both night owls!  We'll get there, I hope!

I am so lucky that I have tonnes of friends who are great at the whole 'getting healthy and fit' shebang.  Here's to getting it done, I guess.  I have a target for the end of the month weight and health wise....I'll let you know if I make it!

  1. It is so hard but you sound to be sensible and realistic about things. The sleep thing is so hard for me too. When I'm working I have to force myself to bed by 10 as a 6am start kills me! I love being on maternity leave for that reason x

  4. You can do it! But please remember that you are lovely (I wouldn't say this if it wasn't true) and don't have man hands or anything like that. We are all SO much harder on ourselves than anyone else would be.

    I think that your goal is definitely attainable, and I wish all the best. But you are lovely now and you will be lovely at your wedding no matter what!

I am working towards the same sort of goal ...being a size 18(Aussie sizes are a bit generous than UK) I also feel cumbersome its like the last few pounds I put on over Christmas & Easter and made me feel uncomfortable so I have just started to change things too. I am I actually eating more... Mainly vegetables and cutting carbs for at least one meal a day and I am feeling like I can do it and oddly not hungry . I find being motivated to exercise is the tricky thing two boys are often my excuse and realisticly its not good enough... So I am making an effort to change my habits and just head out for that 30min walk after the kids are in bed and try to be in bed by 9.30 and asleep by 10... I was a teacher(& have two cousins and my aunt are UK teachers who work FAR too much 70 hours a week and no life is not fair or good for you. Put that marking down grab Matthew take him for a walk... Having a partner (lover or friend) to join in with th exercise with really helps me and keeps me accountable. Wishing you ALL the best... Sorry about the huge comment. Hugs.

  8. Sleep is the BEST THING EVER EVER EVER. We tend to be in bed at 10pm. I love sleep. Good luck with that goal (and the rest - it sounds like you have it in your power).
