Life Lately (According to Instagram)

A fun week, full of work and friends and visits.  January is busy, but it sure is fun!

I've been trying to plan some new and exciting lessons to mix in with some old favourites.  Always a fun part of the job.

Matthew and I had a lovely stay with Siobhán and 'her' Matthew.  We love spending time with this gorgeous couple!

There has been a lot of marking!

Some of my little ones and I are doing an impromptu food collection for the shelter Poppet, Leela and Fry came from originally.  I love how helpful and kind my students and their families are.  This was the collection on Monday morning, the first day.

Gummy bears help so much with planning and marking.

While in Edinburgh we met up with lovely Laura for (the biggest) lunch (in the world!).  Always lovely to see this sweet girl!

This month has been crazed, but lovely.  I'm hoping February is just as fun, but a little more chilled.

Getting organised!

As I mentioned yesterday in my New Year's Resolutions post, this is the year of getting organised.  I can be organised, but with the piles and oodles of things to do I've felt like control has ebbed away a little.  So in my professional life I have tended to stay organised and thorough.  For Junior League I've done quite well.  With blogging I've kept it together.  But home and life and self-care....

....kind of a mess.

So this year I'm starting afresh, and trying to cultivate habits and ways of being that encourage order and comfort.  I'm decluttering, purchasing mindfully, and making time for organising in amongst the chaos.

To prove these arent't just pretty words, some actions to go with them.  Last weekend I tidied my entire study from top to bottom.  To give an idea of the work involved, this is how it looked when I began:

All the clutter.  In the world.  Piles and bags left over from Christmas, the wedding, hither and thither.  Just a clutter bomb.  Worst of all, some of the clutter was stuff I'd bought to help tidy....but not had time to use.

New Year's Resolutions

A brand new year....

For the past couple of years, I've shied away from having new year's resolutions.  What with houses and engagements and weddings, there's been so much to do, so much to plan, having another 'to do' just felt like a bit of a stretch!  This year, however, I want to focus in a bit.  To make some changes.  To modify how I do things and hopefully reap the benefits.  These resolutions can be broken down into five easy strands - some I've had as resolutions before, some are new.

1.  Be kind to myself.

As much as I'm sad to admit this, I'm pretty accomplished at beating myself up.  I'm a worrier by nature and often stew over perceived mistakes and failings for hours and hours.  I hate to let people down and expect a lot from myself, with the net result that at times I'm really a bit of a cow to myself.  I try my best to be kind to everyone and to look for the best in people.  I'm guilty of not always doing so when I look in the mirror.

This year, I'm going to try and look after myself a bit more.

To listen to my heart, my body, my soul.  To take time to relax and sleep and exercise.  To push myself to be fitter and healthier, not in some punitive, horrible way, but because doing so will make me happier and more able to enjoy life.  

I also want to remember that if I take time to look after myself and nurture myself, I'll be able to be a better wife, friend, daughter, sister, teacher, writer....  

2. Be more organised.

This year I really want to hone my organisation.  I know that if I refine my ways of doing things, it'll be a lot easier to keep all the plates spinning!

I've already made a good start (more on that tomorrow!), but this is going to be a year of learning, polishing and improving in this area.

3. Lose weight.

I really cannot state this more plainly.  I need to lose weight, urgently.  This year I'm going to be a little more selfish and make this a real priority.  I'm also going to blog this journey (more to follow at the weekend) because I think I need accountability and support.  I've tried and failed and tried and failed and tried and failed again.  It's time.

4. Read more.

A perennial favourite!  I love books and they nurture and inspire me.  This year I intend to make plenty of time for them. 

5.  Write more.

Here.  There.  Everywhere.  I want to get back into posting here frequently and to spend more time crafting posts.  I want to choose one of my half-finished children's books and actually get the thing written.  I'm excited to work on some new writing projects.
