Beauty: Some current favourites

I've had a rather circuitous journey into liking beauty products, using nice makeup and fragrances and having opinions on such things. Growing up, I lived in a house with my mum and sister, neither of whom wear much makeup, use skincare (beyond the lovely simplicity of soap and water), or are particularly bothered by perfumes or fragrances. Throw in some particularly sensitive skin - much more calm nowadays, but still prone to allergic reactions; just last month I had to get rid of a brand new set of makeup brushes as they left my skin red and irritated - and you have a recipe for feeling very out of the beauty loop.

I was like this for much of my teens and twenties, and it's really only been in my thirties that I've had the confidence and the compulsion to explore makeup, skincare, and all things hair. It's been quite the journey, and one I'm so enjoying. There are countless beauty bloggers who write about beauty products fantastically (Hayley and Caroline being two proper faves of mine), but I also think there's room within the space for the laypersons view. With that being said, here are a few of my current favourite products to use and enjoy.

I love a touch of mascara.  So simple and such an easy way to wake up a look. That being said, I'm quite particular about what I do and don't like for my lashes - I love long, natural looking mascara, and loathe weighty, spidery versions. Day to day I'd been using a different brand, but recently picked up this L'Oreal Double Extension, and I love it. It gives the length and look I like, without being too dense. My day-to-day looks tend to be quite natural and this is perfect for that style, and for night an extra coat ramps up the drama nicely. Below is how the mascara works on my lashes (you can see even more clearly in this tweet).

Point 1: Yes, I have wrinkles. Yes, I kind of love them. Merit badges of a thinky and smiley life.
Point 2: I currently don't wear eyeliner as it makes me cry...this is a skill I'm determined to crack one day!

I really like these Nails Inc polishes - they are tough and give such a great colour!

I love this little Smashbox contouring kit. I don't ever think I'll be the girl applying twenty different stripes to contour the perfect face (although videos of people doing so I find oddly hypnotic!), but this kit is perfect for a beginner. Three shades allow you to contour and highlight with relative ease and I loved how simply the instructions are to follow. Great for adding a little contour to your face.

I am such an Avene fangirl. I discovered the brand a fair few years ago (pre-Gwyneth and Goop, actually) and fell in love, hard. The products are rich, indulgent without being too expensive for everyday use, and perfect for sensitive skin - I've used most products in the range and have never had a reaction. I went to a Thirty Plus bloggers event over the winter where we all got some of the new anti-ageing range to try - this night cream is my favourite from that range. When I use it I wake up with goregously plumped and supple skin, ready to take on the London grime again.

Cheryl Tweedy/Cole/Fernandez-Versini is correct - this stuff is great.  Having long been terrified of hairsprays that produce helmet hait (ah, the joys of an eighties childhood), I've grown to love this Elnett hairspray.  It's great at holding hair and increasing shine without producing tackiness or stiffness.  Love this little handbag size too - perfect for when I've styled my hair early in the morning and am out all day/evening.

Many fragranced products can make me react, but I have such luck with the Sanctuary range. The lovely Erica got me this beautiful salt scrub as part of my Christmas pressie and it's a lovely weekly or fortnightly treat - leaves skin buffed and gorgeously smooth.

So that's a few of my current faves; which beauty products are rocking your world at the moment?

  2. I've been looking for a new mascara. My old faithful was discontinued about 18 months ago and I haven't been able to find one I like just yet! I'll have to make the L'Oreal my next one to try...

Thank you for your comment - I do read them all but it may take me a little while (a couple of days) to respond during busy times. I love reading what you have to say!

Have a wonderful day!
