It’s the end of another busy week here in London, and it’s time to link up with Lisa-Jo once more for Five Minute Friday.
This week’s word is….identity.
We love a good label, don’t we? As a society I often think we all too often fall into the trap set for us by the media, pressing us to label people, to label ourselves, to subscribe to the poisonous frame of mind that ascribes to the idea of people being better or worse than one another. I mean sure, there are a handful of standouts (Hawking, Rowling, Jolie, etc.), but surely we’re just all human? Padding along this little road, making our mistakes, having good days and bad days. Ultimately all I’m aiming for is to hopefully exit this world thinking “Yep. I did more good than ill.”
That being said, I do think it’s nice to have a few labels to attach to yourself, to make up the tapestry of who you are. But it’s all about diversity. No-one is just a mother or a teacher or a Tory….we are multi-faceted, flawed, interesting creatures. I’m reading A Storm of Swords right now, and one of my favourite parts is always when a high-ranking knight or lady or ser is introduced, and as well as their name you hear a great long line of descriptors, titles, etc. So mine would probably be Claire of Forres, now of the village Leyton, eldest of the Thornley line. RAF brat, boarding school survivor, bookworm, friend, sister, girlfriend, Christian, joinee, blogger. Mad of hair, crazy of dance, and fond of badgers.
What would yours read?
