Linking up with the talented and lovely Lisa-Jo for another five minutes of writing, just words on the page, stream-of-consciousness. This weeks focus is perspective.
One of my favourite things about my job is the perspective it gives me. In this busy world, in this especially busy city, sometimes you can lose sight of what’s important. In the rush, things that are unimportant seem more crucial than they are, and the really important things can seem lost in the melee.
In a classroom full of eight to nine year olds, all that changes.
My class couldn’t give a fig about your clothing label, your paycheck, who you hang out with, where you holiday….
…they focus on more important things.
Are you funny? Kind? Interesting? Helpful? A good friend? Fair? These are the currency in 4T, and they are the important things in life, too, I think. I’m always grateful for the perspective my class show to me again and again. It’s how I encounter the world most of the time too, but every so often I feel the whirl of London encouraging me to move my perspective towards the shallower, sillier things. Thank heavens for little boys, lego, stories, and a reminder of the real stuff that matters!
