There’s something so nice about good ol’ fashioned diner food, isn’t there? Wings, burgers, shakes – I don’t indulge often, but when I do I always enjoy the tastes and flavours on offer. The Diner is quite the fave in our social circle, so when I was approached to do a review and to check out some of the offerings on their new All American Menu, I was delighted to accept the mission.
The things I do for blogging. 😉
After salivating over the options on offer, Matthew and I popped along on Sunday to their Spitalfields location. I love that part of town, especially at the weekend when the markets are on, and it meant we visited at a busy, full time – I love seeing restaurants at full tilt. We arrived and were quickly seated in a comfy corner booth.
A quick note on the menu: I love it. I’m a bit of a typography nerd and I loved all the fonts and colours used! I also think it’s great that while there has been a shake-up of the menu, they have also allowed for some dishes to come through the change, and for others to be available on request!
While we perused the menu we ordered a couple of Big Wave beers from Kona. These bad boys always remind me of Hawaii!
To start Matthew had the Bacon Jalapeno Tater Tots which he loved – they were spicy, tasty little morsels!
I went for the hot wings with blue cheese sauce. They were really tasty, but my small portion was vast – I was grateful I hadn’t opted for the large! My Pizza Club lovelies will also be pleased to hear that I managed half a dozen of these spicy delights (I can be a bit of a heat wuss!), and Matthew happily helped me out with the rest.
For mains we stuck to the classic burger and fries combo – Matthew went for the new Arch burger (burger-pulled pork-Monterey Jack cheese) and I selected the DCB (fried chicken-bacon-Monterey Jack cheese). Matthew had the cajun Diner fries and I went for an order of the chilli cheese fries.
To enjoy alongside our mains, we went for it and had milkshakes too! Matthew had the True Blue hard shake – a gorgeous pale blue drink with vanilla ice cream, blueberries and amaretto. I had the Snickers milkshake (chocolate ice cream, Nutella, peanut butter and maple syrup), and made it a hard shake with a kick of bourbon! I love how at The Diner you can make changes to the drinks and meals with no trouble – additions and subtractions were easily and swiftly handled.
Matthew thoroughly enjoyed his Arch burger, and I loved the DCB – my go-to at The Diner is the (excellent) taco salad, but I was very glad I ordered different options this time around!
After wings, burger and half an order of chilli cheese fries I was stuffed, so I had a coffee while Matthew took one for the team and had an NYC Cheesecake Sundae – this was a creamy, sweet delight!
I got to take my dessert to-go, however, and enjoyed a slice of the Cookies and Cream cake at home later that evening (about eight hours after our substantial lunch!).
We had such a lovely visit to The Diner – it’s a fun place to get together and the menu is full of interesting, tasty fare. The staff were all very helpful and clearly work well as a team; they were friendly, welcoming and charming throughout our visit. As ever I was spying on other tables and they received exactly the same level of service and as warm a welcome as we did. There was a table of hungover guys near us that I thought were going to hug the waitress when she delivered their burgers and fries!
If you’re looking for a tasty, filling meal in a fun spot, The Diner is a great shout. We’ll be back again soon.
Disclaimer: I was invited along to The Diner to try some menu items. Our food and drinks were complimentary. All opinions my own (or Matthew’s!).
