Whatever your personal feelings about Valentines, February 14th is all about the love.
How fitting, then, that my blogging calendar has me writing about something I truly love today (I love many things, but today’s topic is definitely one of them!).
I love brunch. The options, the chat, the cocktails, the coffee. There’s something so delicious and inviting about spending time over a meal with friends, family, loved ones, and a long brunch is a charming way to catch up and check in.
I’ve passed Boondocks, on City Road, a fair few times since it opened. With a fair few friends living and working in Old Street, Hoxton and Shoreditch, it’s a part of town I see often. I also love a bit of southern-US comfort food, so it was very much on my radar to try. Imagine my delight, then, when the lovely Katy said she’d been invited along to sample their new brunch menu. And that she had a plus one. I love it when the universe conspires to bring me, breakfast food, and dear friends together.
The decor in Boondocks is a charming mix of down-home Americana with a twist of East London cool, and on the morning we visited the place was full of people tucking into a variety of delicious brunch offerings.
Katy and I both decided on the Bootsies Brunch special, which for £18 will leave you full, caffeinated and happy. You can choose a main, two sides, your choice of juice or a Bloody Mary, and bottomless coffee or tea.
For her main Katy selected the Bojangles – buttermilk biscuit topped with fried chicken, cheese sauce, hot sauce and two eggs of your choice. Alongside that she chose the biscuits and gravy (we were curious to see how they’d arrive!) and hash browns.
As I tend to eat veggie for the most part when out and about, I choose the Huevos Mutulenos, which were really good. A tortilla topped with black bean relish, guacamole, corn, crema Mexicana, cheddar, salsa, plaintains, coriander and two eggs of your choice, this was a feast! I had hash browns too, and a fresh fruit salad. Like I said above, this is a meal that brings a lot of food to the table, and I was really pleased with the fresh, tasty ingredients used.
After the meal Katy and I finished our coffees and took a last little look around – I even managed to remember to ask someone to take our picture together! One of my 2017 plans is to make sure I get lots of pictures with people, as well as of brunch…
Thank you to Katy for inviting me, and to Boondocks for hosting us. I’ll be back soon to have some more Huevos Mutulenos, or maybe to enjoy a movie night!
205 City Rd,
Disclaimer: We were invited to try the brunch menu at Boondocks and our meal and drinks were complimentary. All thoughts, ponderings and food joy my own.
